Doctor and Benefactor

Vincenzo PesanteOn 16th November 1878 he was born in Sanremo into an ancient Sanremasca family. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Genoa in 1901 and immediately afterwards specialised in Pediatrics at the University of Florence.

On his return to Sanremo he won the medical competition as director of the Castillo Paediatric Hospital that Count Beniamino Nuñez del Castillo had donated to the Sanremo community.

He took part in the front line of the war of 1915-1918, with the rank of medical captain and was also called back during the last conflict to organise and direct a new hospital.

He was one of the founders of the Pro Infantia Institute, which was founded in 1919 on the initiative of Dr. Fischietti and had its first modest headquarters in the present day via Escoffier.

The institute, thanks also to the podestà Pietro Agosti, who was its designer, moved ten years later to the present day grand seat in piazza eroi sanremesi and Dr. Pesante for almost forty years gave the Pro Infantia his work diligently and selflessly as Director: at his resignation in 1957 he was awarded with a solemn ceremony a gold medal of gratitude.

Thousands of elderly and young people of San Remo owe to his science, his professional scruple, his intuition and his experience of having happily come into the world and having overcome many childhood illnesses.
The municipal administration awarded him with the title of worthy citizen with the following motivation: "emeritus paediatrician has worked selflessly for over sixty years in favour of the less well-off".
